not the world’s funniest island.

on saturday arvo my friend libby and i went to the world funniest island comedy festival on cocatoo island. its part of the crave sydney festival and was set up to be the big day out of comedy. she got free tickets in a second chance draw for not getting to have breakfast on the bridge.  the arvo started off well with a free ferry from darling harbour. we sat down and the main stage and saw merrick and rosso, who i dont really listen too but were hilarious. when they were done we moved on to see Fiona O’Loughlin  (who i saw at Good news week a few months ago and liked) who sucked and the fest was down hill from there. Julian Morrow and Andrew Hanson from the chaser were there but their tallent was wasted with interviewing the goodies and the yound ones cast members……which didn’t really work. it’s a shame cause it had so much potential. i got a free double pass for Sunday but didn’t use it obviously.

over the last few months ive been doing alot of thinking and i have come to the conclusion that i like to travel and dont like to work.  i work and work and work to go away for a few weeks a year, then to come home and work and work and work to go away again. over the last 5 or so years this has been an endless cycle. esentially working to get away.  so in 2007 and 2009  i tried a different approach,  go overseas and work there, so i was working to be away. this didn’t work either. so now im  dwelling on a new approach to being at work as little as possible and being away as much as possible. stupid thing is, i have been working alot during these last few months of thinking and have taking not one holiday so im failing at present.  casino anyone?

four seasons

Posted in living in Aus by samseggplant on August 31, 2009

there is two important reasons why i titled this post four seasons.  one is the hope that people will stumble upon my blog searching for the hotel chain / crowded house song, thus boosting my visitors and potential readers.  and two, the reason for the post.  a tweet today from james made me think about which season i liked best. i had never really given it much thought before, i think if anyone asked me id always say summer. but dewlling on it alittle as i did i think i like them all equally. i like summer for obvious reasosn’s; beach would be at the top. i like winter for open fires, going to the mountains, and being able to sleep well. i like autumn and sping for their unpredictability and crossed over weatheryness.

snap back to reality

life contnues, people grow and change, new relationships form and old ones fade. basically the world keeps spinning even while you are away. its a bit of a harsh reality in a strange way. i would have loved my life to stay in a torpor and waited for me to come back, and on the surface it has, i have steppend into my old jobs, im living back at home, my family is here, my friends are here, my car is here, my things are here, but its all different somehow, im different. Canada was a positive experience on the whole, i needed to go and i needed the change to happen but i just wasn’t ready for it, i wasn’t ready for how it was going to change me and my views on life. its strange that being single and back in Australia feels so lonely, i thought that being in a long distance relationship was as lonely as i could possibly feel, but alas. don’t get me wrong, its great being back in Aus, its just very strange, i feel somewhat hexagonal in a round hole, almost fitting, but not quite.

taste and taste alone

let me share a unique dining experience a friend and i had whilst we visited Montreal. we walked into a foyer, with groups of people standing round ordering food. we were asked to place ALL our belongings, and coats into a locker and then choose entree, main, desert and beverage before heading any further. next we were introduced to our waitress, who warmly greeted us in a typically European two handed welcome. we exchanged in a little small talk and i was complimented on my amazing Australian accent. my friend was then asked to extend her right arm, to hold on to our waitresses right shoulder and i was asked to do the same with my friend, thus making a 3 person chain. she then lead us into the dark, literally.  you see our waitress  was taking us to our table, in a dining room completely devoid of any light.  she is visually impaired and we were entering her domain, taking our sight made us  clumsy, venerable and completely dependent on her. we made some turns, and where guided into our seats with much more ease than i expected. we were told to keep our drinks on the right of the table which was pushed against a wall. we felt around our table to find our cutlery, i reached across to find Justyna, even though i could hear her, i needed another sensory cue she was there.  for some reason i expected the room to be quite, but on the contrary it was quite noisy, which made perfect sense as our hearing was heightened, making up for the lack in sight. to add to the ambient noise of other diners there was a band somewhere to the right of me. our waitress came over with our entrees very swiftly. its hard to describe the smell i experienced when my entree of roasted eggplant and zucchinis was placed in front of me. i felt the warm, soft flesh of the vegetables with my fingers. i picked up my knife and fork and tried to cut myself food. it took me 4 or 5 attempts, but when i got it the piece was way too big for my mouth, but the taste was unlike any eggplant i have ever tried……amazing…..and as the title of this blog suggests, i like eggplant. stupidly for main i ordered steak, it was so very tasty, but so very difficult to manage into my gob. for sweets, i enjoyed chocolate cake that was warm, dense and silky…………….hands down the best meal i have ever experienced. what an amazing evening, feeling venerable, clumsy but enlightened. my eyes have been “opened”.

rights, right.

back in the days of my stationary eggplant blog, i wrote about keeping left. how when people were walking and didn’t keep left all sorts of trouble’s can occur. well now living a right handed country i have finally become used to keeping right, on the roads and the footpath (sidewalk). now im worried when i head back to the mother land ill be one of those people who frustrated me.
